Norfolk - 31st December 2024

Today, Jayne and I came down to Norfolk for a few days. We started off our trip with a visit at Old Hunstanton to see a juvenile Glaucous Gull. Unfortunately, the bird had been seen early on, but had been disturbed by other visitors before we got there, so we "dipped out"! Thankfully, for us there were other birds around, including a singe Knot, Oystercatcher, Curlew, Sanderling , Common and Great Black-backed Gull  and best of all, a flock of 6 Shorelarks, that we managed to see.

Shorelark

Afterwards, we drove down to St Anne's Drive (Holkham Hall Estate), where we caught up with a Long-billed Dowitcher (204), that has been wintering with a flock of Black-tailed Godwits. We got great views, despite the strong wind, and even managed a record shot, before the flock got flushed by a Red Kite and a Marsh Harrier! A great bird to end the year on.

Cley - 28th July 2023

On Friday, Jayne and I spent a few hours at the Norfolk Wildlife Trust's Cley Marshes reserve.

We went in search of one particular bird, a Long-billed Dowitcher (year tick 172), which had been reported recently. When we arrived, we headed straight to Bishop's Hide. The first sound that met us was coming from the 20+Lapwings that were in front of the hide. We also spotted a very confiding Spoonbill, 10+Ruff, juvenile Shelducks, lots of Avocets (adults and chicks), 2 Green Sandpipers (year tick 173), Bearded Tit (year tick 174), and Black-headed Gulls before our attention turned to the c. 50 Black-tailed Godwits. The Dowitcher had been seen with these birds, and, after a few minutes, we managed to spot it, fast asleep in amongst them. It did eventually wake up for about 1 minute(!) before going straight back to sleep. Unfortunately, the bird was too far away for a photo.

Spoonbill

After the Dowitcher, we had  walk along the beach, where we added  Sandwich Tern, Linnet, Oystercatcher, Marsh Harrier and Ringed Plover to today's list.

It was quite overcast, but we did spot a few butterflies: Peacock (6), Gatekeeper (20+), Small Skipper (10+) and Small Tortoiseshell (1). A single Wall Brown and Red Admiral were also seen by the Visitors' Centre.

New Year starts with a Lifer

This year's "year list" started off in Northumberland, and, as you can see, Jayne and I managed a very respectable 59 species. The first birds, from 1 - 23 were seen in Warkworth, and on and around the River Coquet. Numbers 24 - 43 were seen at Cresswell Pond, and the nearby coastline. Numbers 44 - 51 were seen at St Mary's Island, numbers 52 - 57 were seen around the Priory and pier in Tynemouth, and the Coot was seen at Wetherby Service Station on the way home! The Wren was seen in Warkworth, but I forgot to add it in earlier, so I stuck it on the end of the list!

The best bird of the day was my first "lifer" of the year in the shape of a Long-billed Dowitcher that has been on Creswell Pond since late last year. The bird was on show from the hide, before being flushed by a Sparrowhawk. I didn't manage any decent photos, as it was quite distant, so here are a few on the Bird Guides website
